Havelock David Lloyd

David Lloyd, a native of California, and a former Photographic Instructor and Engineer for the Vivitar Corporation, is currently Tutoring Professional Photographers in the rapidly expanding field of Digital Photography and Digital Work Flow. Residing in the heart of the Central Coast of California, David is a practicing Professional Wedding Photographer; combining artistic, illustrative, traditional and photo-journalistic styles through the Artistic pallet of Digital Photography and Photoshop. "Today's Bride reads all of the current Wedding magazines. She wants to stay informed and wants to select from a variety of Photographic styles in her Wedding Album." Color, black and white, sepia, pastel and collage, not to mention a wide variety of Album styles. To meet these expectations, Today's Wedding Photographer must incorporate an active program of continuing education to include the ever expanding world of Digital Photography and the added sales opportunities it provides.

To this purpose, David publishes a news letter "Behind the Digital Lens" and offers Professional Tutoring in Digital Photography, Photoshop and other Applications specific to Digital Work Flow. Working with a few select Digital Color Labs and software companies, David also provides a two hour Digital presentation which includes a discussion of Digital Color Lab services and print quality as well as software demonstrations with emphasis on Photoshop and Adobe's Camera Raw conversion software. Also demonstrated are NIK Multimedia's Dfine, a new camera specific noise reduction software, and iView-Multimedia's iView Pro, image cataloging application for Macs and Adobe's Photoshop Album for PC's as well as Bay Photo's R.O.E.S., a very well thought out on line Java based print ordering application available for Macs and PC's. David is reviewing other on line software solutions including Studio Master Pro and DigiLabs all purpose Web Hosting, Proof Magazine and customized print ordering software. Also covered in David's Digital Presentation is the importance of creating an in camera Custom White Balance for recording and storing the color temperature of the scene illumination. While this is demonstrated using Ed Pierce's (PhotoVision) specifically designed Digital Target, creating a neutral reference point for the often varying lighting situations encountered in Wedding and Event Photography, is also presented. David is currently offering these Digital Presentations to local PPC and PPof A affiliates and of course, individual Professional Photographers who directly benefit from the availability of one on one tutoring and custom Digital Work Flow solutions, specific to their Studio.

Inspired at an early age by the Black and White Photography of his Uncle Julian Ely, David began his career in photography with the Vivitar Corporation in 1975 as an Engineer and Instructor. "I grew up seeing historical photography of the Emperor of Japan, Hirohito and his Royal Family that my Uncle Julian had photographed while stationed in Japan as a Staff Photographer for Stars and Stripes. Having the availability of a darkroom at age thirteen, I encountered a kind of 'Right of Passage' seeing photography as a way to capture and preserve moments in time. I remember being fascinated by the whole process of photography form capture to print. Today, this still fuels my interest."

"While working at Vivitar as a Photographic Instructor and Engineer, I had the delightful opportunity to conceive, design and create new photographic products. Working at Vivitar was like playing in a toy factory. We designed products that we wanted or needed for our own interests in Photography. We had the opportunity to brain storm new product ideas. My pet project being the development of a complete system of Electronic Flash components, and while I had the Wedding Photographer in mind, I became fascinated with creating a Flash System, with interchangeable bulbs, reflectors, battery packs and brackets and was awarded a U.S. Patent for Electronic Flash Design. While I was part of a team of engineers for the development of New Product Ideas, I also reasoned that Vivitar's General Engineering Staff would greatly benefit by being more involved in photography from a level of personal interest. So I created a curriculum of instruction in basic photography which included field trips to Hollywood where we photographed professional models at Tommy Mitchell's Fashion Photography Studio. This proved to be a great boon in creating an enhanced level of interest for the development of photographic products by the Vivitar Engineering Staff."

"Following my delightful three year holiday at Vivitar Corporation, changing times forged a 25 plus years career in Aero Space Engineering, including the design of a mobile high speed motion picture Tracking Platform utilized for Photographing the lift off and landings of NASA's Space Shuttle."

"I began teaching Photography again at the Community College level in 1998." Students in David's initial digital photography class learned the dynamics of digital images and cameras, scanning, retouching and color tinting with oils and with then with Photoshop. As part of the course curriculum, they also learned how to create magazine cover art and photo essays in the style of National Geographic magazine. “I find that teaching Digital photography is a natural extension of my comprehensive career in photography and engineering, allowing me to combine technology with art and share my personal inspiration with others. I am an image junkie, so to speak, and Digital Photography embraces all of what brings me to the photographic image."

Regarding Digital Work Flow: "Many of the Photographers that I speak with about Digital Photography, express a concern for the amount of time needed to process digital images and are faced with a sense of reluctance for sitting in front of the computer. While I am personally fascinated with the whole process of the computer darkroom, it is important in considering Digital Photography, to evaluate your personal mind set regarding the available options for a practical approach to Digital Work Flow."

Turn Key or Digital Darkroom: Digital Photography comes full circle for the photographer who's interest in photography evolved in the environment of a black and white darkroom. Now, however, with the use of the computer, the hours spent with chemicals and dodging and burning prints, can be easily performed on a monitor screen. For the photographer desiring artistic control of the tone values and color depth of their prints, digital photography offers an unlimited pallet of creative expression allowing for precice control of your final print. However, for the photographer wanting to stay with the turn key approach of sending film to the lab, even that process has been enhanced with the advent of digital. While some computer literacy is required, the process is as simple as placing your images in an on screen cropping guide and sending them via the internet to the Lab of your choice. The lab will then adjust the color, brightness and contrast and physically send the finished prints to your studio along with a CD of the corrected image files. What could be simpler?

"While my photography is now 100% digital, I still own and remain fascinated with film cameras. With Digital, however, I can see the results immediately and make visual, exposure and compositional changes in real time. I then download the images to my computer and begin processing them, sending the edited images via the Internet or burned to CD to the Color Labs of choice, offering turn key and Custom Printing."

David’s photographic works have been displayed at the Santa Maria Airport, Chamber of Commerce, Department of Parks and Recreation, Allan Hancock College and the Santa Maria Public Library as well as numerous homes and businesses in the Central Coast area.
